Lady of the Lake

Lady of the Lake

Watercolor 2001 Framed 32" x 40"

I started this painting after a journey to the North Shore of Minnesota. My husband and I frequently go camping in the many state parks along Gitche-Gumee (Lake Superior). As I was painting a figure started to emerge from the clouds and take form. Just as I was beginning to add detail and really develop the figure the tragic events from September 2001 took place. Those events affectd me profoundly as it did many other people. I actually needed to spend some time recovering in a hospital because I was so deeply sadened. right before i left for the hospital I had been painting and I had painted a red heart where the white heart is now. It was how I was expressing the way that my own heart was feeling, broken. After I recovered I went back to this painting and painting white over the red because I felt a greater sense of peace and wanted to relay that message. When my parents saw this piece they were struck by how much the figure looked like my Grandmother at a young age, and then also myself to a certain degree. Perhaps she was watching over me in those most challenging of times.
